Salina Turda
The silvery mines of Salina Turda seem like they came straight out of a fictional alien world.
Set in the northwestern plains of Transylvania, the otherworldly salt mines of Salina Turda are, by all means, uncharted and futuristic. Since antiquity, the prolific lands of Salina Turda have been harvested for salt. In 2010, they became more than a mineral trove and opened their doors to visitors after an expensive renovation. The mine today constitutes one of Transylvania’s intriguing off-the-map experiences, offering a journey to the depths of the earth.
More than a human-shaped natural beauty, the Salina Turda also acts as a museum for the region’s salt mining history displaying old equipment, tunnels, and mines that were active in different periods. A piece of rustic machinery used to lift salt rocks dating back to the 1800s is among the most fascinating. Visitors can observe it in the Crivac Room. As you walk on the balconies, you will hardly take your eyes off of the silvery stalactites and the wavy stripes of salt layers covering the walls. The temperature will decrease as you descend. But, bear in mind that the most rewarding mines in Salina Turda are the deepest ones. Thanks to a panoramic elevator, you can view the entire mine from different levels.
There is more to Salina Turda than meets the eye. And, you will witness its healing properties once you reach the Gizela Mine. There hasn’t been much mining done in this section, which makes it the perfect place for spa treatment.
