Opera House

When observed from the outside, Romanian National Opera House does not reveal a clue of the extravagance hidden inside its plain white walls. It is home to one of the four national opera and ballet companies in the country. In the early 1950s, the opera house opened its eyes to the world with an exquisite performance of Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades. Since then, it has been among the top attractions in Bucharest. The Opera House represents the cultural and historical heritage of the city through architecture and performance arts.

Even if you are not visiting for a show, the opera house enchants alone with its sublime architecture. While the austerity of neoclassical design dominates the exterior, its affluence is all around in the interior and the main concert hall. Modeled after a Roman theatre, the auditorium is awash with crimson and gold. The hall becomes all the more dazzling under glimmering lights. The centerpiece of the Opera House, a magnificent chandelier featuring 100 gold and crystal branches, will take your breath away. 

The statues of the four muses embellish the arcades on the front face above the three entrance doors. Tour the Opera House Museum on the top floor, or take a walk in the refreshing garden in front of the building for more of the opera’s history. The bronze statue of one of the founding members of Romanian classical music, George Enescu, will greet you there.
