Dominican Monastery
The Church of the Dominican Monastery sits in Sighisoara, seemingly suspended in time with its worn-out facade. Dating back to 1289, the Gothic church was originally part of a monastery. The Oriental and baroque treasures nestled within its walls will have you wondering where to look first. It is the fixed site for the Saxon Mass, hosting convivial gatherings. During the occasional baroque and classical music concerts, its main nave turns into a heavenly corner. If you stumble across one, make sure to have a glimpse into the concert and revel in local tunes.
Sublime architecture lies hidden in plain sight in every corner of the church. Yet, it maintains its unpretentious quality to the end. Its charming character lies somewhere between the gloom of medieval Gothic mastery and versatility. Three pointed Gothic windows anchor the west facade with a spectacular triangular pediment. The majestic organ is arguably the centerpiece adding to the moody air of the great hall. It is an indispensable element in every medieval church. Early Baroque features are also visible inside, appearing on the organ loft, several of the pillars, and vaults. Religious scriptures embellish the walls and archways. They present old craft traditions to visitors.
